Inside Her Regimen with Wanderlust Alexandra Dawson
"Biggest piece of advice: Just do it. We hold ourselves back from so much, but you just have to take action... what's stopping you?"
After just five minutes of chatting with Alexandra, it was already clear - she loves taking walks, whenever and for whatever reason! Aside from long walks to clear her mind, she also loves spending her time in coffee shops, and exploring new areas. She has an undeniable love for travelling, and is all about living well and living happy. Read below for her incredible story!
What does being your #WholeSelf mean to you?
I think it means just really tuning into your interests and what makes you feel good, rather than basing it off of what works for everyone else. It's also about owning who you are and not being embarrassed about it. Just letting yourself be yourself, whatever that means for you!
How does your day get started?
First thing in the morning, I go on a walk. I'll wake up earlier than everyone in the house and (try to) drink some water. Then I'll take my pup for a walk. After, I go on another short walk with my mom. When I come back I'll make some coffee, sit down, and start looking at emails and see what I have to do for the day. I always make sure to put on my favourite music and open the blinds to let all the light in. But without fail, each morning consists of a walk, coffee, and music :)
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness is overall how you feel mentally, physically; eating well, taking care of your body and moving it in way that feels good. Nurturing relationships is also very important since social interactions is such a big part of mental health. Taking care of your mind is so important!
How do you incorporate wellness throughout the rest of your day?
I always make sure to take walks throughout the day, especially whenever I need a break from my computer. I also make sure to eat healthy, nourish my body, and I work out. Making time for friends and family is also a priority. Mental health is important to me, so lots of walks work for me!
Share with us a bit about how your wellness journey started.
It was 2012 when my eating disorder started. I had anorexia, was not into health at all, and didn’t know anything about health and wellness. In 2015 was when I started working with a personal trainer, and that’s when I started kinda getting into healthy eating because I knew I needed to fuel my body correctly. Though I was getting into healthy eating, it was not in a holistic way; I was obsessed with looking at numbers in calories and macros and really still didn't know much about health, but thought I was being healthy. I started my Instagram in 2017 and began learning a lot from other Instagrammers, which motivated me to start learning everything that I could. This was a long process because I was the least healthy eater when I was younger. What started as an unhealthy obsession actually grew into a healthy passion!
When did you know you had a message you wanted to share?
I knew when I started realizing that there was so much more to the life that I was living. I was just in and out of treatments and doctor appointments all the time because I was unwell, and then I saw on Instagram all these people forming genuine relationships with their community. I saw how brave they were, sharing their story, and thought that if I could do that and help just even one person - it would be great.
How do you make time for balance and self-care?
Typically you might think of getting your nails done and taking baths, but to me its simply being good to my own body, and really making time to do things that nourish my soul. Going out and exploring a new area is something I love and something that is really good for my mental health. Making time to work out, making time for friends and family... it's all about making time for yourself!
How does your regimen change when you travel?
My regimen doesn’t actually change too much, it just becomes a lot more flexible. I might be eating out a lot more. I still try to get in that morning walk, even if just 10 minutes, and wake up before everyone. Then it also depends on the vacation whether I am working out or not, or I just walk a lot. I really do like to eat similarly to how I eat at home since it makes me feel good, but I go in with the mindset that I can eat or do whatever I want. I'd say I go in intuitively, while making it work for myself. I sometimes bring a few things from home like collagen, which comes everywhere with me.
We all have stress and we’re curious – what do you do to manage it, and how has your outlook on stress changed?
I used to never know how to relieve stress! Now I love going on walks, and it's just my cure for anything. On these walks I love listening to podcasts, and I love listening to Drake. It helps me get away from my own mind and stress. Walking is just my go-to. Some of my favourite podcasts right now is Money Making Maven and Wellness Realness.
What is your go-to snack for a pick me up in the daytime?
I love fruit. Any fruit. Peaches are my favourite in the summer. Another all time favourite is 100% dark chocolate with almond butter!
Of the following 7 pillars – nutrition, sleep, cognition, mood, cycle, fitness, and beauty – which are the highest priority to you, and why?
Nutrition is really important, the way you eat can affect your mood. Mood is really important. Its crazy how what you eat can affect many things. Actually, mood would be the most important since so many of these areas affect mood, and mental health is really important.
How do you and your family support each other in living your best life?
My family has always been very supportive! If we have an opinion we’ll share it in a supportive way, like constructive criticism. This is really important because it gives me a different perspective on things, and I'm never afraid to go to them because they're always so open-minded.
What are your favourite wellness trends?
Bulletproof coffee! Washing your hair less. And of course collagen, which has helped me so much.
And your least favourite?
Certain diets like intermittent fasting and keto dieting that can be harmful if people aren't educating themselves before doing them.
Do you have any advice for our audience on how to stay positive and maintain a good outlook?
Just realize that you kind of control your life and your day! Once you realize that and really own it, it makes such a difference. I used to let small things get to me, but once I realized I control my happiness, I became so much more positive :) Mindset is everything, and you can choose happiness.
What advice do you have for someone who’s ready to start sharing their message?
Biggest piece of advice: just do it. We hold ourselves back from so much, but you just have to take action. So many people may plan and plan and plan because they don’t feel ready. But just go for it! What's stopping you?
When in the grocery store – what do you pick up?
A bunch of veggies, zucchini, eggplant, avocado, tons of fruit, bananas (so I can bake with them), organic eggs, organic turkey burgers, organic chicken, almond butter, and dairy free yogurt.
What's your big vision?
My big vision is to travel the world! I want to inspire people to live their best lives, whatever it is for them. Through traveling, I want inspire others to find their own big vision like mine.
At the end of the day, how do you complete your regimen?
I try and stop doing any work type of at around 8, then I will start getting ready for bed. I sit in bed with my dog and catch up a little bit with social media as I don't usually during the day. I've recently started reading as well.
