Inside Her Regimen with Lauren Howe
"Honesty and vulnerability are two beautiful qualities. They allow others to connect with you and experience shared humanity."
It was an early, jet-lagged morning for Lauren Howe when she chatted with us. As a meditation teacher and life coach, I could feel her calm even just from speaking with her! Just returned from her travels, Lauren took the time to tell us her story.
It might come as a surprise but Lauren wasn’t always into mindfulness – she had previously worked for the government for seven years, having completed a Bachelors of Arts and Law degree. It was through different turning points that led her to realize that she needed to listen to herself and find what she wanted. She took a break from work to travel, and that’s when she learned to step out of her comfort zone and start her path in mindfulness. Now she does what she loves, with her husband, three cats and dog (she grew up with several pets, such as a sheep and a duck, just to name a few) by her side. She even volunteers at a cat haven!
How does your day get started? My days always vary so I don't have a regular routine. Gone are the days of 9-5 Monday to Friday which is something I've had to get use to after leaving my office job. But I generally try and start the day with a morning walk and coffee with my hubby and our dog Winnie down at the beach. Then once I have the house to myself I jump into my meditation space and depending on how much time I have meditate for around 30 minutes. I guess you could say I have learnt to flow with life a lot more and if I need to hit snooze then I do it or if I feel energized then I'm up and out the door! Listening to my body generally dictates my morning.
What does wellness mean to you? For me wellness is about making conscious choices that support me on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.
How do you incorporate wellness throughout the rest of your day? Possibly the most important thing I do is try and be mindful of the thoughts, beliefs and the stories I tell myself. Our minds are incredibly powerful and have the ability to influence how we perceive our day to day experiences as well as impact us on an energetic, emotional and physical health. Other things I do throughout my day include meditation, spending time in nature, eating a plant based diet and being around people and environments.
Share with us a bit about how your wellness journey started? My journey started a few years back when my husband and I could not conceive children. It was definitely a wake up call on a lot of levels. I had always considered myself generally 'healthy' but my experience with infertility was absolutely the catalyst for not just my wellness journey but it also forced me to stop living small and to start living a life that was truly aligned with my inner truth not what was expected of by others.
When did you know you had a message you wanted to share? I guess it was when I started being vulnerable and honest with others that I realised my story resonated with so many other women and men. I truly believe in living a life that is unapologetically aligned to your values and inner truth. I have lived the life that society expects of you and know personally just how soul crushing and unhealthy it can be.
How do you make time for balance and self care? Self care is a non-negotiable. Whether it is eating well, grounding myself through breath work or offering myself the same compassion as I would a friend when I am struggling. I know that I am worthy of that and without caring for my self I cannot effectively give and live a full and meaningful life. I don't necessarily strive for balance because I think that life ebbs and flows. At times some areas of our life will need our attention and focus than others!
How does your regimen change when you travel? I love travel and it is something we do often. The travel I do is often centered around hiking, getting off the grid and at a much slower pace. So my wellness routine is probably better when I am away than when I am home! But if I am in the city I make sure that I have a hit list of vegan eateries, book in a post flight massage and I try to walk as much as possible.
We all have stress, we're curious- what do you do to manage it, and how has your outlook on stress changed? Meditation is my medicine and continues to provide me with the space to truly see and break the trance of everyday living. My practice has taught me how to embrace the wholeness of life, to rest in uncertainty, to let go and surrender to what is and open my heart to possibilities beyond my wildest dreams.
What is your go-to snack for a pick me up in the daytime? I am a typical vegan and would say that nothing beats a home made hummus and crackers as a snack. The secret ingredient to an epic hummus is maple syrup!
Of the following 7 pillars- (nutrition, sleep, cognition, mood, cycle, fitness, and beauty) - which are the highest priority for you, and why? Cognition. I truly believe that our mind plays a very critical role in how we feel on an energetic, emotional and physical level. Nutrition, sleep, fitness etc. all play an important role in enhancing our cognition.
How do you define innovation? Anything that plays a role in lifting the global consciousness to live a more sustainable, compassionate and unified existence.
What are your favourite skincare tricks & products? I am super minimal and natural in my products. My go to products are home made coffee scrubs, apple cider vinegar toner and jojoba oil.
How do you and your inner network support each other in living your best life? By reminding each other that we are all human and life is, and will always be, imperfectly perfect.
What are your favourite wellness trends? While not a 'trend' I know meditation is on the rise and as a meditation teacher who's life has been transformed through the practice I really hope it finds it's place in every day living!
And, your least-favourite? I'd probably say that trends in general are not something I necessarily follow. However if a trend is what gets someone started on their wellness journey then that is a fabulous thing!
Do you have any advice for our audience on how to stay positive, and maintain a good outlook? Perspective is everything. We can choose how we perceive the life in front of us. Do you see the job you have as a burden taking you away from things you would rather be doing or an opportunity to have the finances to put a roof over your head, enjoy that beautiful meal in your favourite restaurant with your partner or go on that holiday? We have a choice. Simply start by bringing an awareness to the stories you tell yourself. If they aren't serving you perhaps it's time to change them.
What advice do you have for someone who's ready to start sharing their message? Honesty and vulnerability are two beautiful qualities. They allow others to connect with you and experience shared humanity.
When in the grocery store- what do you pick up? A Vego Whole Hazelnut Chocolate Bar. If you are vegan or even if you aren't this chocolate bar is seriously amazing!
At the end of the day, how do you complete your regimen? You will usually find me in bed snuggling my hubby, our three cats while watching some seriously addictive Netflix tv series.
